17th Century Lantern clock by Joseph Lloyd in 3 Needle Alley in Moorefields

A very fine 3rd period Lantern clock made Ca1675 it has a lovely early conversion from Balance to Anchor Escapement and retains all its original wheel work and beautifully engraved Alarm disc. The alarm would have been discarded with the application of the Anchor escapement and fitting of the 17th C long pendulum. Finding examples in this condition is a rarity. Good colour and patination throughout.

Joseph Lloyd was apprenticed in 1664 to John Pennock through Isaac Puzy and freed through the Clockmakers Company in 1673. John Pennock in turn was apprenticed to the Master clockmaker William Bowyer, probably the finest maker of Lantern clocks of any period.
Thus Joseph was one to become one of a very few to have a clockmaking lineage directly back to the earliest and finest makers and with the other apprentices was at the very heart of clockmaking from this period. This is much evident in the quality of this fine example.
